The Top Three Ways To Increase Focus


Everybody could do with more energy on occasion, but it is a massive challenge to muster any drive and motivation in the modern world when we are surrounded by constant distractions. Distraction is literally at our fingertips, and when we are trying to complete a task, whether it is a workout in the gym or a report in the office, the reality is that, if we want to improve our focus, we must remember that it is like a muscle. Limit Your Focus

You may think multitasking is the best way to get a lot done quickly, but multitasking reduces your focus by 40%! To overcome this, you've got to eliminate juggling multiple tasks and picture your attention as a spotlight that goes on one particular area at a time. When you give your full attention to one thing, you will achieve more, but it also reduces distraction because you’re not “thinking away.” When we multitask, we are inviting multiple distractions into our world. You can reduce distractions through simple tools, but also, realize that distractions come from internal disturbances, such as anxiety and exhaustion. 

Practice Being Present 

If you are present and in the moment, this is the simplest way to recapture any form of mental focus. Being present is about removing any distractions, and being mentally engaged. Have you found yourself drifting away when you are talking to someone? One of the best practices to keep your attention sharp is to focus on that one thing by being present. If you worry too much about having bad focus or think about other things when you know you should be focusing, you've lost the game. Much like in meditation, if you find yourself drifting away, gently bring yourself back to the moment. It takes a lot of practice, but it can certainly help to fine-tune this skill. 

Build the Muscle 

It doesn't happen overnight, and when we realize that distraction has a big impact on our life, we need to start placing a higher value on our time. Building your focus is something that you should do as an athlete would. Take plenty of time to practice it, for example, set aside 10 minutes every morning to do focus exercises, such as counting down from 100 to 0 in increments of 1, then increments of 2, etc. As our mind is a muscle we, much like when exercising our bodies, have to give it the appropriate stimulus, as well as allow it to recover.

There are times when you will hit the wall, and in these moments you shouldn't beat yourself up, but realize that you've taken two steps forward and one step back. The important thing is to track your progress and realize that every little habit that goes towards building your focus will make a massive difference in your life if.
